Heavy

night walking
with the beat of rain
falling
on hooded head
locks
ponytailed back
behind scarf-covered face
eyes
fixed downward
navigating puddles

nothing
but the slosh of wet boots
the constant hum of machines
persistent city lights
strung between wires
buzzing
a siren oscillates
so distant
it cries in obscurity

the city feels void
without the familiar dogs
or the yowl of cats
streets
are quiet
within a sphere of
muffled voices
intersection signals
clicking

and the pat, pat, pat
of rain
